&lt;p&gt;Unfortunately the downside is that as a contractor you're often seen as a &amp;quot;mercenary&amp;quot; and treated a second class citizen by the employees. &amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;E.g., as I type this, I am seated in the old receptionist cube at my client while all the full time devs get full offices with 4 walls. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That's why I'm giving contracting a go....brought in to write code and not worry so much about the hygiene part of it.&lt;/p&gt;
