  • JK.com -- Feedburner Pro Enabled

I posted a while back about the Feedburner MyBrand service ...I've been taking it for a spin on some other low traffic feeds and am nothing less than blown away, so JK.com is now Feedburner enabled and ready to rock. Community Server 2007 has built in support for Feedburner out of the box; it's as simple as plugging values into a couple of textboxes, flipping a switch or two, and blammo...syndication feeds are burnerized. What that all means is that the transition should be seamless for existing...
  • Feedburner MyBrand Service -- Brand Your Feedburner Feed

I've had a Feedburner account for a while now, but have been reluctant to throw the switch on my site's feeds over to it...while I may not have a huge circulation (and therefore no "brand" to adhere to), I'd like to keep what little recognition I do have in my feed address instead of the generic feedburner.com/whatever, i.e. my name (or in the case of clients, their company name, etc). Feedburner now offers a pretty impressive array of services, so I was in the process of giving in and started to...
  • Add A Nice Touch To Your Site -- Snap Preview

A couple of folks in the Community Server have posted about a nifty offering from the folks over at Snap.com : Snap Preview Everywhere . It's a little gimmicky, but adds a nice touch to existing websites via just a couple of lines of javascript added to your header. I only have 2 complaints (if you can even call them that): I wish there was an option to specify the dimensions of the snap preview window (it's tiny on my 1600x1200 monitor), and an option to open links to external sites in a new window...
  • Community Server 2.1 Service Pack 1 Released

As was announced over in the CS.org forums yesterday , Telligent has released Service Pack 1 for CS 2.1. A list of fixes/enhancements as well as download and installation instructions is located here (you can choose to only download the SP itself, or an complete installation of CS2.1 with SP1 included). I have updated most of my sites (including this one) with no issues. Of course if you've modified any of the core CS code you'll need to run a diff on those files and download the SP1 SDK so you can...
  • How To Enable IIS6.0 Compression

An often overlooked feature of IIS6.0 is that it natively supports compression of your web files. The problem is that it isn’t as easy as flipping the 2 check boxes on in the properties page for your site, there’s a bit of manual labor involved, namely manually editing some settings in the IIS metabase. Here’s how to do it . Just a few minutes of your life, et voila…super speedy page loads (pages on JK.com decreased in size by 60% or more, and almost none of them are over 20kb now). The good news...
  • Live Comment Preview

Phil just posted a great blurb about how he added live comment previewing to his website, so I promptly stole borrowed his code and added it to mine. To see it in action, start typing a comment (supports basic HTML tags) and watch the ooey gooey characters start to flow by in the Live Preview textbox! Implementation time? Less than 10 minutes. • ReverseDOS Spam Filter -- Works Brilliantly

I know I’m a few days late in posting this (was supposed to have this up last Friday), but in short the ReverseDOS anti-spam filter I installed recently works absolutely brilliantly. Trackbacks have been enabled for a week, and aside from a few rogue spams that I didn’t have filters set up for (i.e. the links to block weren’t in the RDOS.config file), I am 99% spam free. Having a quick look at my IIS logs, I can see that RDOS blocked ~2500 would be spams in a 7 day period, and I’ve...
  • ReverseDOS Spam Filter Preliminary Analysis

I posted earlier about the fantastic ReverseDOS anti-spam filter that I installed on my site to try and cut down on the wasted bandwidth/clock cycles incoming spam attempts were still chewing up; the preliminary results are looking very promising (I haven’t had a single spam comment since I installed it), and my bandwidth usage is down by about 30%. So, I’m re-enabling trackbacks (which by far and away is where most of the junk was coming from…I’d say a ratio of about 20...
  • ReverseDOS Spam Filter Installed

Just because I disabled trackbacks on my site doesn’t mean the traffic hasn’t continued to pour in and sap my bandwidth. So after some hunting around I found this nifty tool which in essence tricks would be spammers into thinking your site is overloaded, and hopefully they’ll disconnect. From the website: ReverseDOS is a very simple HttpModule that checks various parts of incoming requests against a list of crap that you don't want pushed on to your site. If ReverseDOS detects a...
