  • eVGA 8800GT Video Card -- The Way Games Are Supposed To Be Played

The title of this post is a blatant rip off of nVidia's current tagline; I felt it rings more true than ever with nVidia's newest offering: Their 8800GT is out of this world when it comes to price/performance in video cards. The story behind how I got mine is more interesting than it should be though. I was fortunate enough to purchase one from MWave the day after they were released (most eTailers sold out within hours), and had it overnighted to me for the very reasonable price of about...
  • This Could Only Happen In North Carolina

A while back, the story about inhaleable alcohol broke over the internet (I can't find the specific link, but this was announced several years ago in 2004). Fast forward to today, and there's an article floating around stating the machines have been banned in my home state of North Carolina (in addition to 21 other states). My home state is at the very center of the bible belt, and is also a haven for commercial televangelism so it's not a huge surprise until you factor in the following...
  • What If You Built A Browser, But No One Used It?

Through my daily reading of tech news, I came across this dandy: Netscape Navigator 9 Beta released . Wait a second, you mean to tell me that Netscape A) even still exists and B) is still releasing new versions of Navigator? Until reading that headline today, Netscape had ceased to exist in my mind. The last version of NN I played around with (out of curiosity) was something in the 7.0 timeframe ( 5 years ago ) which left my machine as quickly as it got there, namely due to huge memory consumption...
  • Recent Band Discovery -- The Cinematics

It's hard to sift through the crapola that is the music industry as of late...95% of the stuff that's out now is pure junk IMO. And who has time to go to the music store these days? Sometimes I wish I was a DJ so I could get paid to listen to music. Regardless, I've been trying to branch out some lately; TLC and I recently discovered a late night show on Fuse TV that caters more to indie rock and whatnot...The Dive. It comes on reeeeaaaallly late though. Speaking of which... It's unreal how hard...
  • New Community Server Licensing Document Released

[update] The community is jumping in over here and the reaction is about what I expected. The MVPs are weighing in with their opinions on a seperate thread as well...it is very much worth mentioning that Rob Howard and Co are actively listening , so feel free to chime in if you have an opinion/suggestion/etc. [/update] Earlier today, Rob Howard released the new licensing scheme ( direct link [.pdf]) for Community Server 2007. I won't venture into too much detail until that document is finalized ...
  • Paint.Net 3.0 Released, And Other Stuff

Paint.Net 3.0 was released a couple of days ago, snag it while it's hot. It's good enough (for a non-professional designer) that I haven't found the need to install Photoshop on my rebuilt machine. In fact, I'm 100% Adobe free, meaning my machine is free of: Photoshop, Reader (replaced by Foxit ), and Flash. I consider both Flash and Reader annoying enough at this point to be considered malware. I'm also Quicktime free, which in my opinion is about half a notch above Real Player in terms of A) actual...
  • Dammit Landis Part Deux

I’m sure everyone has seen this : “PARIS (AP) -- The Tour de France no longer calls him champion. His cycling team cut him loose. About the only chance Floyd Landis has of keeping his prized yellow jersey will now likely be decided by an appeals process that could drag on for months. Landis was discredited and disowned in short order Saturday when elevated levels of testosterone showed up in his "B" or second doping sample -- as it did in the initial "A" sample released last week. The...
  • Dammit Landis

From Sports Illustrated ( full article here ): Floyd Landis says he didn't do it -- didn't inject testosterone, didn't apply a testosterone patch to any part of his body. Floyd Landis just returned my call, and I asked him straight up: "Did you do it, bro?" He said, "No, c'mon man," in what would turn out to be the first of several denials. I want very badly to believe him. So do I…so do I. Great to see another ‘merican win The Tour though. I guess we’ll see what happens with the...
  • .Net Framework 3.0 -- Microsoft's Versioning Scheme Baffles Me

What with the announcement of WinFX being renamed to .Net 3.0 , there has been some confusion as to exactly what .Net 3.0 really is. Kirk does a great job of explaining it here (a bit dated, I’m way behind on my news), but I’m still confused as to why this will be a major release and not a point release. I do realize that the BCL/CLR is completely separate from the languages that leverage it, but we’ve gone from DLL hell to versioning number hell. And now apparently the BCL/CLR...
  • Gates On Future of CS Education

There is a decent thread over on Slashdot about the future of Computer Science and why students are shying away from the major. This is slashdot we’re talking about so the zealots are out in full force, but there are some gems in the comments if you look for them. Sadly, I share a lot of the same sentiments. I love what I do for a living, but the job security issue has kept me up at night on more than one occasion. We really had it good a few years ago, then the bottom fell out from under us and...
