  • So That's How The eSata Drives Generate Revenue Money

My new eSata drive arrived today...Newegg was having a special, so I got 320 gigs for 80 bucks. You can't beat that, save for one thing: It didn't come with an eSata cable. Price of said cable? 20 bucks , and it has to be ordered seeing as no one in a brick and mortar around here carries them. Sounds like a fantastic ploy on the drive makers' parts: Sell the drive for cheap, but charge an arm and a leg for the connectivity. It was still a pretty sweet deal even after having to fork out...
  • Pownce: Quite A Disappointment (And Other Thoughts)

Pownce was recently launched (I'm here for anyone wanting to 'friend' me, though I don't see myself being too active in the near future, plus good luck getting the site to actually come up) as a so-called ' Twitter killer'...I'll sum the Pownce experience up in a nutshell: "If you thought Twitter was unreliable, you'll be pining for Twitter's level of uptime after just a couple of hours using Pownce™." For any readers who don't know what Twitter is...
  • This Could Only Happen In North Carolina

A while back, the story about inhaleable alcohol broke over the internet (I can't find the specific link, but this was announced several years ago in 2004). Fast forward to today, and there's an article floating around stating the machines have been banned in my home state of North Carolina (in addition to 21 other states). My home state is at the very center of the bible belt, and is also a haven for commercial televangelism so it's not a huge surprise until you factor in the following...
  • What If You Built A Browser, But No One Used It?

Through my daily reading of tech news, I came across this dandy: Netscape Navigator 9 Beta released . Wait a second, you mean to tell me that Netscape A) even still exists and B) is still releasing new versions of Navigator? Until reading that headline today, Netscape had ceased to exist in my mind. The last version of NN I played around with (out of curiosity) was something in the 7.0 timeframe ( 5 years ago ) which left my machine as quickly as it got there, namely due to huge memory consumption...
  • A General Generics Question -- Don't Fight The Compiler

I've got a pretty firm grasp on generics such as when to use them, why they are useful, etc. I'm with the rest of the .Net camp when I echo how extremely useful they are. I've also learned that if you're fighting the compiler on generics for more than a few minutes, there is a reason as to why what you are doing is wrong. The above held true until earlier today when I was left scratching my head over some code that IMO should have compiled just fine. Nothing explains coding problems...
  • Well That Turned Out To Be A Nightmare

Twenty days since my last post...in the 3+ years I've been running this blog I don't think I've ever gone that long. Hopefully the two of you that read this site haven't jumped ship quite yet. Regardless... The job that I was so incredibly stoked about turned out to be quite the nightmare, and thus my brief tenure there has ended. Long story short, I was actively seeking other employment opportunities, they found out (I wasn't exactly trying to be stealthy) and weren't too happy about it so we mutually...
  • Unable To Open URLs After Upgrading Windows XP x64 To Service Pack 2

I recently upgraded my Windows XP x64 installation to Windows 2003 Service Pack 2 (for those not in the know, SP2 for Windows 2003 also applies to XP x64 since they are the same code base) only to run into an issue where clicking on any urls/hyperlinks from desktop applications (Outlook, Word, etc) generated the following error: "General Failure. The URL was (hyperlink name)." I use Firefox as my default browser, and it was definitely related to SP2 as this problem didn't show up until after the...
  • Save Internet Radio

Streaming internet radio is in trouble . The basic premise is as follows: On Friday March 2nd, the U.S. government (specifically, the Copyright Royalty Board, or "CRB") announced its determination of the royalty rates Internet radio webcasters must pay the owners of sound recording copyrights to license the music they play for the years 2006-2010. The owners of these sound recording copyrights are, in the vast majority of cases, recording companies ("labels"). While successful webcasters which have...

  • Hang Up The Phone And Drive

I saw the funniest thing driving home today. I pulled up behind a soccer-mom-mobile (and SUV for anyone who has no idea what that means) which had a fairly large bumper sticker with the following text: "Drive now, talk later." The driver was, of course, yakking away on the phone the entire time I was behind him. I don't care if you drive and talk, but if you're going to advertise something at the very least have enough dignity to stand by your convictions. Share this post: | | | | |

  • All The Men Out There Can Sympathize With Me

Folks outside of the US more than likely have no idea what today is ...hell, I'm not even that much of a football fan (except for the past couple of years when the Panthers have done fairly well in the post season). That being said, it's a tradition here in the states...if even just for the commercials. I will be spending my day driving 4 hours to the NC mountains to attend a wedding. Yes, a wedding. That was obviously a fight the groom fought hard, and lost. An hour at the wedding, an hour or so...
