  • Why Are Modern Browsers Such Memory Hogs? A Short Primer on Processes, DLL's, and Threads

I normally don't like to participate in the so called "browser wars" and that is not the intention of this post. But, I feel that the title poses a legitimate question: What is going on with modern browsers sucking down memory like tequila shots these days? As a web developer, I have a slew of browsers installed on my machines for testing: Internet Explorer (unfortunately): Necessary evil, plus it's the only browser that supports Windows Integrated Authentication, which is mandatory...
  • On Microsoft and Backwards Compatibility: Windows 8 (and How to Make it More Usable)

Note; If you don't feel like reading this entire post, at least read this: Start8 from Stardock Corp (30 day free trial, 5 bucks after that, and well worth it IMO): Get your start button back, disable hotspots, and boot directly to the desktop with that utility. Otherwise, read on. This post is not going to be a diatribe either for or against Windows 8 (though I will give a brief opinion towards the the end of this post), but rather on Microsoft's stance on backwards compatibility vs. other...
  • Are Personal Websites/Blogs Passé?

I have a love/hate relationship with my personal website/blog. When I started this site almost 9 years ago, social networking wasn’t even in the vocabulary of the internet, and personal branding was a must have. Fast forward to 2012, and Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn are ubiquitous, and Tumblr is a great turnkey solution. I purposely left out Google+ because like so many other companies, they are way too late to the party. This website is a labor of love, but a little more laborious as of late...
  • So That's How The eSata Drives Generate Revenue Money

My new eSata drive arrived today...Newegg was having a special, so I got 320 gigs for 80 bucks. You can't beat that, save for one thing: It didn't come with an eSata cable. Price of said cable? 20 bucks , and it has to be ordered seeing as no one in a brick and mortar around here carries them. Sounds like a fantastic ploy on the drive makers' parts: Sell the drive for cheap, but charge an arm and a leg for the connectivity. It was still a pretty sweet deal even after having to fork out...
  • This Could Only Happen In North Carolina

A while back, the story about inhaleable alcohol broke over the internet (I can't find the specific link, but this was announced several years ago in 2004). Fast forward to today, and there's an article floating around stating the machines have been banned in my home state of North Carolina (in addition to 21 other states). My home state is at the very center of the bible belt, and is also a haven for commercial televangelism so it's not a huge surprise until you factor in the following...
  • Well That Turned Out To Be A Nightmare

Twenty days since my last post...in the 3+ years I've been running this blog I don't think I've ever gone that long. Hopefully the two of you that read this site haven't jumped ship quite yet. Regardless... The job that I was so incredibly stoked about turned out to be quite the nightmare, and thus my brief tenure there has ended. Long story short, I was actively seeking other employment opportunities, they found out (I wasn't exactly trying to be stealthy) and weren't too happy about it so we mutually...
  • Save Internet Radio

Streaming internet radio is in trouble . The basic premise is as follows: On Friday March 2nd, the U.S. government (specifically, the Copyright Royalty Board, or "CRB") announced its determination of the royalty rates Internet radio webcasters must pay the owners of sound recording copyrights to license the music they play for the years 2006-2010. The owners of these sound recording copyrights are, in the vast majority of cases, recording companies ("labels"). While successful webcasters which have...
  • Hang Up The Phone And Drive

I saw the funniest thing driving home today. I pulled up behind a soccer-mom-mobile (and SUV for anyone who has no idea what that means) which had a fairly large bumper sticker with the following text: "Drive now, talk later." The driver was, of course, yakking away on the phone the entire time I was behind him. I don't care if you drive and talk, but if you're going to advertise something at the very least have enough dignity to stand by your convictions.
  • All The Men Out There Can Sympathize With Me

Folks outside of the US more than likely have no idea what today is ...hell, I'm not even that much of a football fan (except for the past couple of years when the Panthers have done fairly well in the post season). That being said, it's a tradition here in the states...if even just for the commercials. I will be spending my day driving 4 hours to the NC mountains to attend a wedding. Yes, a wedding. That was obviously a fight the groom fought hard, and lost. An hour at the wedding, an hour or so...
  • A Horrible Horrible Tragedy

I've been going back and forth about posting this for several hours now. Tossing and turning, sleep will be a luxury tonight. So what the hell, I'll post it. Maybe I'll get a little peace out of it. Today I received about the worst news I've received in a long time...it ranks just under my Mother getting ill : One of my best friends passed away Tuesday afternoon after battling a lengthy illness. Needless to say, the "vacation from Jayson" has been abruptly interrupted and I now have yet another horrible...
