Well, I had an elaborate post all planned out to announce a new personal blog I'm starting (need to keep work and play somewhat separated) and was going to use Live Spaces...only to find out over the past couple of days just how much LS absolutely blows. Last night I arranged all my widgets on the site, got my colors and layout all purdy and whatnot, only to stumble across a couple of severe limitations of LS Blogging this evening:
- You cannot delete any of the predefined categories.
- You cannot (permanently) add your own custom categories, you must use the predefined ones.
- You cannot classify a post under more than one category.
- Probably more crap, but I gave up after discovering the above.
These are showstoppers for me. Of course the obvious questions (to me at least) are: Why don't I just set up a new blog within my existing site? Easy, I want a separate domain. Ok, so why not just register a new domain and use CS's built in virtualization technology? I want something I can just set up and forget about. CS is fairly low maintenance, but I have hosting constraints to worry about (database size, file system storage, bandwidth, etc)...I'd like to let someone else worry about all that. I just want something completely different than what I have now...maybe I'll go with a hosted WordPress or MovableType (TypePad? Blogger?) solution, but who knows...I don't know much about them. What I'm not looking to do:
- Toy with code. I don't care what language it's written in, or what platform it runs on.
- Customize it much (if any). Basic is fine, and I don't care if a gazillion other blogs look like mine.
- Expect to become the next Scoble.
I just need a place to vent personal stuff.
Who knows, maybe I will just virtualize my existing site since I can run CS in my sleep. Regardless, look for a new totally OT blog coming within the next couple of days/weeks. I will of course announce it here. Recommendations for solutions are welcome.
