Yoga Will Kick Your Ass

I used to be a physical guy when I was younger.  I played tennis and soccer competitively throughout high school, and was an avid skier for about a decade.  I used to rock climb, hike, camp out, and even went through a running phase for about a year where I ran between 10-20 miles 3-4 times a week.  I also raced mountain bikes for a few years (until my bike was stolen around the age of 16).  I even lifted weights for a bit (though you'd never know it by looking at me today).

All of this came to an abrupt stop about 5 years ago when my career kicked into overdrive and I started devoting most of my time to computers and learning (among other stuff).  So, as part of the JK v2 initiative I'm doing as of late, I decided to try something new.

Yoga.  No, it's not just for chicks anymore.  Truth be told, I probably never even would have considered taking a class except for the fact that my father (who (as regular readers know) I am living with for the time being) started getting into yoga a while back and ended up opening his own studio about a year ago (he retired from a career in commercial photography at the ripe old age of 45, which was 10 years ago).  One of the perks of being his son is that he offered me free classes for life, so I finally decided to take him up on it and had my first practice earlier this evening.

An hour and a half of yoga kicked my ass like it's never been kicked before.

Ok, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration (or maybe it isn't?)...but I'm quite out of shape and about as flexible as a 2x4.  I will definitely be sore in the morning, but it's nice to be getting back into physical activities.  Even better is that yoga exercises your mind just as much as your body, which is something I'm in dire need of.  I'm already hooked and can't wait until the next session.  If any Charlotteans are looking for a nice, clean, relaxing (and conveniently located) studio to practice in, come down and see us sometime!

Yoga is a fabulous exercise and you certainly use muscles that you didn't even know you had!  I haven't done it regularly for a couple of years, bt I loved it when I did.

What kind of Yoga are you doing?  Yeah, even the toughest guys I know often don't have strong core muscles.  And by core muscles I don't just mean a six pack. It's all the little support muscles that get a workout.

I am a tennis player myself and could play for hours under the sun - no sweat. But 1 hour of intensive yoga poses is like 3 hours in the courts. Tiring but terribly refreshing!

About Jayson Knight

Jayson Knight was clueless to the computer programming world until he took a C++ class in college. The rest is proverbial history. He has been building applications targeting the .Net framework for 7 years, focusing mainly on internet technologies and database driven web application development.

Most recently he left the world of Corporate IT to finish up his degree in Chemistry, with an eye on Medical School and an Anesthesiology residency program. Read this post for more information.

He is also a Community Server MVP: Community Server is the software that runs this site, plus many others on the web. For more information, check out http://csmvps.com.

When he finds time to pry himself away from his computer and university studies, he can be found on the mountain bike trails when it's warm, and on the ski slopes when it's cold.
