CS Tidbits #18: Add A Mirrored Content Tab Screencast

In a previous post I presented a screencast detailing how to add mirrored content to your Community Server installation.  In this screencast we'll take it one step further and I'll show you how to create a new menu tab so that your users can find this content easily as once you've added a mirrored content section it can be a little tricky to actually find it.  I've included notes inline with the video so it should be pretty self-explanatory.  This process assumes you've already followed the steps outlined in my previous video (here's a refresher if you haven't).  The end result can be seen on my site; we'll add a new tab called "External News."

A direct link to the video is here.  Enjoy the show!

Great Jayson! Glad to see you're continuing to release screencasts. :-)

This one is a good topic that many have asked about, and the article could have a second title as well: "How to add a button to the CS Navigation bar", since I believe it's usable in many places, not just for mirrored blogs.

Looking forward to your next screencast. 8-)

Excellent screencast, Jayson.

You provided me with the missing piece for my own external feed.    Did you also employ any URL redirection to get the feed URL to show up as only one level down?

ASB, on my site I did indeed, however I left that out in the screencast as I'm using a 3rd party component for this (Ken's ExtendedUrlMappings plugin).

They have channged the UI interface in 2.1  I'm not sure now how to do it or the Aggregated Feeds part of the setup is broke? It won't let me add ANY feeds at all. Can you help with this?

Thanks,

Gary

Gary, can you provide more information as to the issues you're having? Both of my mirrored content screencasts were done on CS2.1.

About Jayson Knight

Jayson Knight was clueless to the computer programming world until he took a C++ class in college. The rest is proverbial history. He has been building applications targeting the .Net framework for 7 years, focusing mainly on internet technologies and database driven web application development.

Most recently he left the world of Corporate IT to finish up his degree in Chemistry, with an eye on Medical School and an Anesthesiology residency program. Read this post for more information.

He is also a Community Server MVP: Community Server is the software that runs this site, plus many others on the web. For more information, check out http://csmvps.com.

When he finds time to pry himself away from his computer and university studies, he can be found on the mountain bike trails when it's warm, and on the ski slopes when it's cold.
