CS Tidbits #16: Add A Mirrored Blog Screencast

Today's tidbit is a bit of a deviation from my previous tidbit posts in that I'm doing a demo via a screencast (I'm taking a cue from J-O Eriksson). I've posted about the new blog mirroring feature in CS2.1 numerous times, and now that beta 1 has been released I figured it was time to post about exactly how to go about mirroring content in CS as this is definitely one of the coolest new features in the new release.

It's worth mentioning that a couple of the steps in the screencast are optional, but are Jayson's recommended "best practices" for mirroring content.  They are:

  • Creating a new blog group is optional, but will assist in categorizing mirrored content.  For example, if you wanted to create an ASP.NET blog group, you could just mirror ASP.NET related content to that group.  You could then create a WinForms group and do the same.  Ad nauseam.
  • You do not have to disable comments or trackbacks, but I think the original poster would appreciate it; if a user does want to leave a comment or trackback they have to visit the originating site itself.

Before mirroring ANY content, make sure you are not violating that site's Terms of Service, or making any copyright infringements.

NOTE: Right click the video, go to zoom, and choose full screen for better clarity.  A direct link to the screencast is here.  I will also follow up on this post with a more technical explanation of mirroring content (along with some caveats and gotchas) that are outside the realm of this post.

Great Jayson! More screencasts! :-)

Great to see more people doing this, it's a great way to show a product's features. What recording software do you use? May I recommend Snagit from TechSmith (I don't provide a link here since I don't know if your spam filter will take it)?

Snagit is a great tool for both screenshots and has a profile for doing video captures with high quality. No I don't any provision for promoting them, just love the product! :-)

Looking forward to see more screencasts from you!

Yeah I'm just using WME for now, not really happy w/ how the video is displayed in the post itself. Also, anything recorded at less than high quality looks terrible. I'll look into SnagIt though, heard good stuff about it.

I don't know why I didn't think of doing screencasts before, could have saved myself a lot of typing!

Guys, I use AutoScreenRecorder 2.0 Free version.  It has both Free and Commercial versions.  I'm happy with it since it can do what I want.

About Jayson Knight

Jayson Knight was clueless to the computer programming world until he took a C++ class in college. The rest is proverbial history. He has been building applications targeting the .Net framework for 7 years, focusing mainly on internet technologies and database driven web application development.

Most recently he left the world of Corporate IT to finish up his degree in Chemistry, with an eye on Medical School and an Anesthesiology residency program. Read this post for more information.

He is also a Community Server MVP: Community Server is the software that runs this site, plus many others on the web. For more information, check out http://csmvps.com.

When he finds time to pry himself away from his computer and university studies, he can be found on the mountain bike trails when it's warm, and on the ski slopes when it's cold.
