Gates On Future of CS Education

There is a decent thread over on Slashdot about the future of Computer Science and why students are shying away from the major.  This is slashdot we’re talking about so the zealots are out in full force, but there are some gems in the comments if you look for them.

Sadly, I share a lot of the same sentiments.  I love what I do for a living, but the job security issue has kept me up at night on more than one occasion.  We really had it good a few years ago, then the bottom fell out from under us and it’s been a struggle ever since (for most people I know at least).  I’ve threatened myself on more than one occasion that I’m getting out of the industry, then I reign myself back in because I really can’t think of anything else I’d like to do (besides something music related…but that industry makes the IT realm look rock solid)…I *love* writing code, I love computers, I just love being a geek!  I can definitely relate to the 18 year old going into college now who’s considering a CompSci major, and then taking a look at the tech carnage of late and passing on it for another degree.  If I were to go back to school, I’d more than likely go with something BioChemistry related…I would definitely pass on a CS degree at this point.  More and more I feel like programmers are just another commodity, but that won't stop me from persevering.
