Don't Play Doom 3. At Night. Especially With Headphones.

Now that I’ve got my rippin’ new machine built, it’s time to get back into game mode…went down to the local Media Play yesterday and picked up Doom 3 (and was going to purchase HalfLife 2, unfortunately they were out) as well as the Resurrection of Evil expansion pack.  As far as graphics/sound goes, all I can say is wow.  Things have changed quite a bit since the Quake/Unreal Tournie days.  Even at 1600x1200 @ Ultra High Quality (4x AA) I’m moving along at around 40fps+-.  I was playing through my normal 5.1 speakers until around midnight, then due to the fact that I live in an apartment I donned the headphones (if you’ve got a buck fifty to spare, get a set of those…they are the best headphones out there for the money IMO).  Big mistake.  On more than one occassion I’m pretty sure I screamed out loud…the sound effects are super creepy and come out of nowhere, the adrenaline was definitely flowing…that’s immersion for you man.  As far as the gameplay itself, it’s a little repetitive…bad guy comes at you, shoot said bad guy…wash rinse repeat (it’s a first person shooter, to be expected).  The environment/interaction more than makes up for the repetitiveness though.  I can also definitely say I like the Resurrection of Evil add-on a whole lot more than the base game, and it’s much creepier.  All in all, if you’re rig has the horsepower to run this sucker, I definitely recommend it.

Yuppers, RoE was in many ways better than Doom 3 itself - though I don't know I'd have appreciated it as much if I hadn't played Doom 3 before, sorta like the Alien -> Aliens difference.

One was suspenseful and fear-driven, the next was more about the action in the fear!

RoE has less of the templatized "spawn two in front and one behind" gameplay that annoyed me about D3, too.
