XBox 360 -- Backwards Compatibility Confirmed

Something all of us XBox Gen 1 owners have been wondering about has been confirmed over at Engadget; (most) Gen 1 games will run on XBox 360…smart move on Microsoft’s part though I wonder if there will be a performance hit as of course this will have to be done via emulation given that the XBox 360 platform runs on a modified PPC architecture, and the Gen 1 runs on i386, though perhaps there could even be a performance increase as the 360 is packing some serious heat under the hood.  What this also (maybe?) means is the OSS crowd could hack into that emulation layer to get the *nix flavor du jour running on it.  Regardless, this is good news…my Gen 1 library (all 12 titles) thanks you Microsoft, as does my a/v equipment as I’m out of hi-def ports on the back of my TV, and out of digital audio ports on my receiver…and I’ll be able to finally throw my ailing XBox Gen 1 away.

Sidenote:  Why is my XBox ailing?  It’s pretty simple actually.  I own a Whippet; I adopted him when he was 4…this was 2 years ago.  He came housebroken…for the most part.  Initially it was a little rough and on more than one occasion he mistook my XBox for a fire hydrant…needless to say, canine urine and electronics don’t mesh too well.  Actually, a little better than I would have thought as the damn thing still works about 75% of the time.  Bad dog!  Cheers.

My guess is that as it's only "selected" titles that'll work they may have a very sepcific emulation core, or possibly just recompiled the titles in question and stuck the executables on a hidden partition or somesuch.

As MSFT are normally totally anal about appcompat the decision to not make it generally backwards compatible is bizarre...
