Wireless Battery Powered External Harddrive Anyone?
When will one of the big players in wireless tech/storage tech come out with a wireless, battery powered (rechargeable of course), external harddrive? The technology infrastructure is there; wireless bits are zipping around pretty quick as of late (up to 108mbs with some specific hardware, which is plenty fast for general business use (in my case, loading up VS solutions from an external hdd), still a bit off from USB2 speeds, but plenty fast). I love my external harddrive (which houses anything not related to core application/system files), but I’m still tied to my desk…meaning I can’t just pack up my laptop and go somewhere (preferrably outdoors) outside the realm of my WLAN, or without an available power outlet (most outdoor places don’t have those of course). Hopefully we’ll see something like this released soon…if a laptop can run for hours off of batteries alone, an HDD should be able to get plenty of mileage as well…just throw a fast wireless connection in as well and we’d be all set. No brainer IMO…I predict we’ll see something like this before year’s end.
