Google Desktop Search Tool Goes Beta

Google has released a beta version of their desktop search tool.  More information via Google can be found here, and some reviews are here and here.  I normally would be all over some beta software like this, but my machine is already exceeding it's limits (still waiting on Kingston to ship me the half-gig stick o' RAM they owe me) so I am going to pass for now, not to mention that as of this release it only indexes the C:\ drive (this does me no good as all of my docs are on a seperate drive, e:\)  My take?  Google is simply smoking its rivals right now in the search department (as if it wasn't already).  This dishes out a huge blow to Microsoft as their built in search in windows simply sucks for anything more than a trivial amount of data, and the MS indexing service is ridiculously resource (mainly I/O) intensive...it's the first thing I turn off on a new install of Windows, not to mention this service wreaks havoc with ASP.NET temporary files.  If this product comes even close to what's mentioned in the reviews mentioned above, MS has it's work cut out with WinFS, and Lookout might be too little too late for email indexing.  Google is building an information searching empire, and I can't wait to see what's next (rumors of a Google browser abound).  I look forward to future versions of this product.  Happy searching.

Google may be smoking in the web search department, but their desktop search is more of a steaming pile. You use LookOut so Google's desktop search will disappoint you in both interface (it is a crippled version of their web interface. The web interface isn't anywhere near good enough for a desktop app and their desktop interface isn't as good as their web interface. what were they thinking?) and features (LookOut indexes more files and filenames, Google is painfully lacking on this front).

LookOut crashed my system. Things have sped up since I deleted it.

I've been using Copernic ( http://www.copernic.com/en/products/desktop-search/index.html ) since the day after I uninstalled Google's stillborn desktop search entry. It does everything Google's desktop search did (but better), does everything you wish it did, and does a lot of things I wasn't bold enough to hope for. It indexes all of my music, video, source code (and other text files), email, PDFs, Word docs, photos, etc, has a file viewer built-in that highlights the search term, and pretty much blew away all expectations I had (which were based on using Google desktop search and LookOut, neither of which are even in the same ballpark).

About Jayson Knight

Jayson Knight was clueless to the computer programming world until he took a C++ class in college. The rest is proverbial history. He has been building applications targeting the .Net framework for 7 years, focusing mainly on internet technologies and database driven web application development.

Most recently he left the world of Corporate IT to finish up his degree in Chemistry, with an eye on Medical School and an Anesthesiology residency program. Read this post for more information.

He is also a Community Server MVP: Community Server is the software that runs this site, plus many others on the web. For more information, check out http://csmvps.com.

When he finds time to pry himself away from his computer and university studies, he can be found on the mountain bike trails when it's warm, and on the ski slopes when it's cold.
